Sometimes this... The Chair of Information Systems and Sustainable Supply Chain Management gives students the opportunity to try this out as part of the start-up course. They develop a profit or non-profit-oriented business model from their ideas. Sometimes it becomes something more. Students take off as founders with the help of various bodies at universities and funding from the federal and state governments. These promote and support start-ups. One such support and funding is the “Startup Olympics” event. It is organized by GUIDE, the Center for Start-ups and Innopreneurship at the UDE, in cooperation with EWG, the economic development agency of the city of Essen. Other important partners support the event.

Eight students took part in the Startup Olympics in Essen this weekend as part of the master's project for business IT specialists at Prof. Dr. Hannes Rothe's Chair of Information Systems & Sustainable Supply Chain Management. This was the second time that the Master's project was able to take part in this fantastic experience thanks to an invitation from GUIDE.

An intensive weekend awaited the students at the opta data Group's premises - lots of work, many new encounters with around 80 participants, input on various aspects of founding a company, 1:1 discussions with mentors and all-round catering. The master's students were thrilled with the open spaces and the small, dedicated ecosystem that formed over the weekend among the participants and the team of organizers. What was almost unexpected for them was how much progress they made with their ideas.

Over the next five months, the students have time to concretize their ideas to such an extent that a first part of the final product is created. This is known as a minimum viable product (MVP). This course is therefore very practically oriented - and gives a great deal of freedom. The students get into action - just do it, try it out and see where and how the initial idea develops. Later, it is possible to move into the co-creation lab Place Beyond Bytes. Here, all members of the UDE have a place to pursue their ideas, especially those that deal with data and want to create impact. The Startup Olympics as part of the Master's project are a highlight: the team grows together. The intensive work on their own idea, the cooperation with others and, above all, the valuable support from non-university people opens up new perspectives for the students and, above all, is a lot of fun. Once again, one of the teams won medals. The High Society team was awarded bronze. Congratulations! Team Klartext can also be proud of themselves - they all had a great pitch and an enormous amount of productivity behind them.

But the Startup Olympics offer much more: participants immerse themselves in the existing ecosystem of founders, startups and supporters in the Ruhr region. This ecosystem stands for the promotion of ideas, creativity and courage. This is not only suitable for start-up teaching, but also valuable for any course at the university that focuses on understanding problems and developing ideas and solutions. The Startup Olympics then offer the opportunity to find like-minded people and form a team - and above all to move from thinking to action.

The great support from the start-up ecosystem, including FuckUp Night Ruhrgebiet and mentors such as Pitch and Grow, IHK Essen, ENACTUS and In Frauenhand, makes the event so valuable for making contacts in the start-up scene.

At the same time, GUIDE, the Co-Creation Lab Product Innovations and the Place Beyond Bytes ensure that all UDE members can also be supported in the development of a start-up project beyond the event.

Dear prospective students,

We are delighted that you are interested in the Master's in Innopreneurship. The master’s programme has always been very successful, but unfortunately had to be discontinued in its original form. After extensive discussions with the University of Duisburg-Essen, we have now developed the course further and will set it up as a new Master's programme at the newly founded Faculty of Computer Science. We are retaining the particular strengths of the old programme - high orientation towards application, small cohorts, close connection to the innovation ecosystem - and expanding them with a stronger focus on sustainability and new technologies.

The new course will be offered as a Master of Science in “Sustainable Innopreneurship”.

Such a process usually takes a long time and follows an intensive evaluation procedure that ensures the high quality of courses offered at UDE.

At present, we cannot yet guarantee that it will be possible to start studying in the winter semester 2024/25, as this evaluation process has not yet been fully completed. However, we are doing everything we can to make it possible for students to start their studies in the winter semester of this year. If the evaluation can be completed promptly, the Master's in Sustainable Innopreneurship will start in October 2024/25. The application period is expected to start in June or July.
Please add your name to our list of interested parties so that we can keep you up to date.

You will receive updates via email or new information on an updated soon.

Via the mailing list, we will gladly provide you with the prospective course of studies (subject to possible changes) and a brief description of the new Master's program Sustainable Innopreneurship.

We look forward to starting this new chapter in entrepreneurship education at UDE together with you.

Warm regards
Chair of SUST - Information Systems and Sustainable Supply Chain Management

Extended Generativity Theory on Digital Platforms https://www.sust.wiwi.uni-due.de//news/news/extended-generativity-theory-on-digital-platforms-23279/?no_cache=1 New publication in Information Systems Research We always thought that digital platforms are ever-changing, ever-growing. We simply ask what is growing: the userbase, the product, or the ecosystem? What we found was that this lets us question the ‘ever’.

In our recent article, published in Information Systems Research, we suggest an Extended Generativity Theory on Digital Platforms. This theory cautions a long-held assumption that generativity in platforms leads to unbounded growth. Following six large transaction platforms over 8 years, we study how platforms become generative through expansion of product and ecosystem boundaries in order to gain user growth. We were surprised to see that that these boundaries ebb and flow towards a dynamic equilibrium.

I am very happy to see this article finally being published. We started engaging with some of the material back in 2013, when I heard Peter Wolter presenting the eye opening changes at OTTO - a former catalog business becoming one of Europe's largest transaction platforms. A couple of years in and several conversations with the fantastic team - DanielAbayomiMatthias, and Kai - we are happy to open up the conversation around generativity and platforms to the broader IS and management community.

Special thanks to Ola Henfridsson and Robert Wayne Gregory and the anonymous reviewers for their continuous support and thought-provoking input throughout the process!

Abstract:

The assumption that generativity engenders unbounded growth has acquired an almost taken-for-granted position in information systems and management literature. Against this premise, we examine the relationship between generativity and user base growth in the context of a digital platform. To do this, we synthesize the literature on gener-ativity into two views, social interaction (expansion of ecosystem boundaries) and product view (expansion of product boundaries), that jointly and individually relate to user base growth. Both views help us explain how opening a platform relates to the emergence and resolution of conflicting expectations in a platform ecosystem that result in new functions and expanded use. We adopt a panel vector autoregressive approach combining data from six large transaction platforms that engaged with open-source developer communities. We found that the dominant narrative of generativity engendering growth, although generally supported by our analysis, obscures the fact that the inverse is also true; that is, growth can lead to expansion of product boundaries (inverse generativity) and that generativity can be bounded; that is, growth can stabilize ecosystem boundaries (bounded generativity). Against this background, we propose an extended generativity theory that presents generativity and growth in an integrative view and raises awareness about the limitations of the “unbounded growth” claim. We conclude that there is value in separating the two views of generativity conceptually and analytically, along with their relationship to user base growth, and we call for research on the pathways through which generativity produces growth.
